Course description

Children, as well as adults, experience anxiety. In fact, anxiety in children should be expected at specific times during development and is usually regarded as normal. For example, a child sometimes experiences higher levels of anxiety the first time she attends school or child care. Children experiencing excessive anxiety may not yet have the ability to vocalize their feelings or possess the necessary coping skills to manage. As a result, dealing with their fears and anxiety may be even more difficult.

The text was helpful in offering positive and practical ways of supporting young children who are experiencing anxiety. I would have liked to have the course discuss also the possibility of trauma and/or neglect of the children within their own home and family as this certainly can contribute to a child's anxiety and their physical, emotional, social, cognitive and psycho-social responses and experiences with anxiety. The practical examples (such as relaxation techniques of yoga and breathing and relaxation exercises) were helpful.
